What’s the Difference
Between MIDI and MP3?
MIDI
Midi files are NOT audio files and can only be played with a specific type of software. However, there are MANY benefits! Using an app like Sweet Midi Player on your iPad, you can use midi files in your choir rehearsal as a virtual accompanist.
Here are some great ways midi files can help you teach:
Access any point within any song quickly
Mute or Solo any part at any time
Adjust the volume and pan of each part independently, like a mixer
Adjust the tempo according to your rehearsal needs
Transpose to any key
Focus your attention where it should be - on the student
Octavo Midi files contain separate ‘tracks/channels’ for the piano accompaniment and each vocal part (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass). Track/Channel 1 will contain the piano accompaniment. Track/Channel 2 contains the uppermost vocal part. Each successive Track/Channel will contain the next lower vocal part. A ‘Merged Vocals’ track is also provided.
All composer/arranger tempo and other musical indications are followed. Great care is also taken to include dynamics and other musical elements. You can be confident that your students are learning the correct notes and rhythms!
Sweet Midi Player is available at www.ronimusic.com. It is available for Mac, Windows, and all mobile devices.
MP3
Part-predominant MP3 files are great to share with your students so that they can learn the correct notes and rhythms on their own time! Listening with earbuds or headphones, they will hear the piano accompaniment on the left, and their voice part on the right. Each purchased octavo will download with a separate mp3 file for each voice part and an mp3 with just the piano accompaniment. Here are a few examples:
